This Twin Comanche has been owned by the present owner since 1995 and it has been hangared almost all of that time. Twin Comanches provide twin engine redundancy, speed, and payload at near a single engine entry price and operating cost. Twin-engine rate of climb is listed as 1,460 fpm and single-engine rate of climb is 260 fpm. Of course, achieving that goal was not much of a stretch for Mr. Pilots who flew both aircraft often said that the Twin Comanche was everything the Apache wasn’t. The engines have TBOs of 2,000 hours and are highly regarded for their simplicity and durability. The new PA-30 Twin Comanche, or TwinCo, provided pilots with performance that pretty much fit the package it came in. The PA-30’s 160-hp, Lycoming IO-320-BlA engines produced cruise speeds of 165-170 knots while burning only 15.5-17 gph total (approximately 8 gallons each engine). Piper first flew the Twin Comanche just a few days before I was born and Ive spent thousands of hours in the back, copilots and pilots seats of a 1963 and two 1965s. The big draw of all the Twin Comanches was the airplane’s ability to extract maximum speed from minimum horsepower and fuel consumption. The first Twin Comanche PA-30 was delivered in 1963 and over 2,000 were manufacturer through 1972. The Twin Comanche was developed from the single engine Comanche by Ed Swearingen who at the time operated a facility that specialized in the modification of production aircraft. ![]()
